I'm not sure if mentioned this at MediaWest or not, but this is not one of my favorite eps, and I'll tell you why. I don't doubt that John Winchester had a little nookie now and then, like Sam said, he wasn't a monk. But John was a stubborn, suspicious man. There is no way he would have taken this woman's word for it that he was Adam's father. He would have had a DNA test done.
I also think that Sam and Dean wouldn't have taken the kid's word for it. Just because there were pictures of this kid with their father doesn't mean he was really John Winchester's son.
As for the Ghoul telling Sam that Adam really was his brother, we all know that these evil sons of bitches lie. I have serious doubts that this one would tell it's victim the truth before it ate him
Supernatural didn't Jump the Shark with this ep, but I think there were several flaws with it. The stuff I talked about is just my opinion and that's not worth much.

I think that all of the Winchesters would have wanted proof that Adam was John's son. DNA test, even a simple blood-typing to confirm the possibility.
I don't really care if Adam was John's son, because ultimately it doesn't make any difference. We only have the Ghouls' version of events, and gosh, those pictures looked like photo manips! :) The ghouls admitted that they were trying to torture the people responsible for their father's death....what better way than to make the boys question their trust in their father, and thereby, their whole lives with him?
If JOhn was exactly what ghoul!Adam said? Well, John was a complex person. I would guess he wanted to give his thrid son some kind of family feeling. Those family outings are still interpreted through a kid's point of view. A kid who wanted his father to be his hero. So John swung by for birthdays and a holiday or two. That doesn't mean he loved his first and second born any less. I think he was an idiot for not sharing, but he didn't tell them a demon killed their mother, either.
There are many ways to interpret Jump the Shark. Unless we get either Adam or John mentioned again, I think any and all of them are valid.

It was argued at MediaWest that perhaps John didn't tell Sam and Dean about Adam because he didn't want the Hunter life to touch this son. I wonder if that was the case or if he did have some doubts.
Those pics did look like photo manips. I thought that the reason John didn't tell Sam and Dean that a demon killed their mom was because for a long time he just didn't know what it was and once he found out, he wanted to keep them out of the fight as long as possible to protect them.
John wasn't a perfect man by any means. Jump the Shark didn't help clear anything up about the man one way or the other. They keep saying they want JDM back, but until his schedule shows some sign of clearing, no John.
