I've discovered that I lack the ability to make icons. I'm hoping I'll be able to figure this out. Of course, any help that can be directed my way will be greatly apprecaited. I'm also trying to figure out how to make icons.
If you don't want to make icons there are lots of icons communities out there. Also there is icon_tutorials which is a really good community for this sort of thing
I'm going to see what I have when I get home from work. My computer is all shiny and new so I haven't explored everything about it yet. I think there's some sort of photo thing on there. If not, there's always Best Buy.
Before I got my LJ account I made icons with a simple free-ware program where you could drag your picture into the box (100x100) and save ... presto, an icon sized picture. Naturally I don't have that any more as I have managed to progress ... but it was very humble beginnings.
What a journey having this Shaw bloke as a hobby is giving me.
As shaw012145 has said, you need some kind of photo studio type programme. I use ArcSoft PhotoStudio as it came with my scanner, and have found it easy to use.
Icons are usually 100x100 pixels. Most programmes have a place where you can draw either a rectangle, square, circle etc. around the part of the picture you want to use.
Hey, I just randomly noticed you on my profile page, but I am an icon maker myself :) I use Adobe Photoshop. Once you find a program to use, the icon_tutorial community has all sorts of tutorials to show how to do various effects. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

I use Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 (which is very basic). There is also Paintshop, Corel, Arcsoft and no doubt many others.
Good thing with Photoshop is DEVIANT.ART ... one can add more brushes to the program ... all the more to play with.
The icon of Doyle here ... that frothy border brush is from fraoch_icons, for instance.
A whole new language to learn too ... it is fun ... confusing at times, frustrating other times, but 99.9% of the time it is fun.

Don't know if that is of any help.
